There are many times in a diabetic’s life when they’ll have a hankering for something sweet. My opinion is that, depriving yourself of a treat every time you get a craving isn’t the right way to go. It can quickly lead you down a path of resentment and frustration and turn what may already be a poor mood downright nasty.
However, smashing back a bag of Haribo Tangfastics every time you fancy it probably isn’t the right way to go either. So below is a list of some genuinely tasty, much healthier (but also still sugary so remember to test and correct!) healthy sweet alternatives.
With Halloween just around the corner these are also perfect for treating a diabetic kid who doesn’t want to miss out on the fun but you want to make sure has manageable blood sugar.
Below are a few ideas with links through to Instagram embeds, many with step by steps on how to make these brilliant healthy sweet ideas.
Delicious Healthy Candy
Fruit Leather
So these are basically fruit roll ups, but a healthy version made from basically just the fruit. You can add sweetener to give them a sweeter taste without the associated uptick in carbs. As they are fruit they will have fructose in so keep an eye on those BGs.
Low Carb/Keto Energy Balls
These bad boys are packed full of protein, and a bit of fat as well, and very low on the carbs so tick all the boxes. There’s loads of combinations of flavours and ingredients so you can try them out and find your favourites.
Homemade Honey Roasted Nuts
Definitely better on the BGs than shop bought sweets, but still quite sweet if we’re honest, are homemade honey roasted nuts. Although they are coated in honey, so still pretty sweet, they’re also packed with healthy fats and protein to help balance out the carb delivery into the body. As you’re making them as well you can choose to be as liberal or reserved with the amount of honey as you want.
Dark Chocolate Coated Strawberries
Strawberries are amazing on their own, but what could possibly make them better? Oh yeah, coating them in a delicious shell of dark chocolate of course. Depending on how dark you like it the chocolate could in theory be basically zero sugar anyway so all you may have to account for is the sugar in the strawberries. Either way, these are damn tasty and a much better prospect than sweets.
Fruit Chips
You probably guessed these were on the list due to the cover photo on this blog. Elegantly simple and surprisingly tasty, fruit chips are arguably the healthiest alternative in this list. Fruit of your choice can be sliced and either dried in the oven or, if you have the equipment, dried in a dehydrator. Either way, the end product is a crunchy sweet snack that is very easy to manage from the perspective of someone who’s pancreas has given up on them!
There are a few delicious sweet alternatives, for halloween and beyond! Have you got a favourite that didn’t make the list and people need to know about? Drop it in the comments or send it over on social.
